At a glance
Limited
evidence for flaxseed (linseed) oil (ala)
Our honest take
Flaxseed oil capsules, a plant source of the omega-3 ALA. The body turns only a small fraction of ALA into the EPA and DHA found in fish oil, so this is not a like-for-like swap for fish oil; vegans wanting EPA and DHA are better served by algal oil. We could not verify the oil or ALA per capsule, so check the pack; a spoonful of ground flaxseed gives ALA for much less.
- You are vegetarian or vegan and want a plant omega-3 (ALA) top-up
- You prefer capsules to adding seeds or oils to food
- You want EPA and DHA: choose fish oil or an algal oil instead
- You already eat ground flaxseed, walnuts or rapeseed oil regularly
- You take anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines, without checking with your GP or pharmacist
The science
Flaxseed (linseed) oil (ALA)· evidence: Limited
Flaxseed oil is the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a short-chain omega-3 fat, at roughly half the oil. ALA is an essential fat, but the body converts only a small fraction of it (often under 10%) into the long-chain omega-3s EPA and DHA found in fish.
So flaxseed oil is not a like-for-like replacement for fish oil. Vegans who want EPA and DHA are better served by an algal oil. Studies of flaxseed oil itself for heart health and other uses have mostly been small and mixed.
A tablespoon of ground flaxseed, walnuts or rapeseed oil provides ALA more cheaply than capsules.
ALA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. (The claim may be used only for food which is at least a source of ALA as referred to in the claim SOURCE OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS; the consumer must be informed that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 2 g of ALA.)
Typical dose: Capsules usually give 1,000 mg of oil (about 500 mg of ALA) each. The authorised claim needs 2 g of ALA a day, which means around four 1,000 mg capsules.
Safety: Generally well tolerated; large amounts can loosen stools. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines.
