At a glance
Limited
evidence for tri-creatine malate
Our honest take
Unflavoured tri-creatine malate, which is creatine bound to malic acid. There is very little research on this form and nothing to show it beats plain monohydrate, and it gives less creatine per gram. The label is also inconsistent about the serving size (5 g in the directions, 4.5 g in the nutrition table, which says 3 g of creatine). If you want creatine, monohydrate is better value and better proven.
- You specifically want tri-creatine malate
- You want the best-proven form: plain monohydrate
- You dislike sour or unusual tastes: buyers are split on the taste
- You want a clear serving size on the label
The science
Tri-creatine malate· evidence: Limited
Tri-creatine malate is creatine bound to malic acid. It is marketed as easier on the stomach or better absorbed, but there is very little published research on it in people and no good evidence that it works better than plain creatine monohydrate. Because part of each gram is malic acid, it also provides less creatine per gram than monohydrate.
It still provides creatine, so the authorised creatine claim applies when you get 3 g of creatine a day.
Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine.
Typical dose: Enough to provide 3 g of creatine a day; check the label
Safety: Same general precautions as creatine monohydrate. Speak to your GP first if you have a kidney condition.
