At a glance
Insufficient
evidence for resveratrol
Our honest take
A capsule built around resveratrol and marketed alongside NAD+, the molecule cells use for energy, which declines with age. The research on both is mostly laboratory and animal work; human trials of resveratrol are small and inconsistent, swallowed NAD+ is largely broken down before absorption, and there are no authorised claims. Treat this as an experiment rather than something with proven value.
- You are curious about resveratrol and accept the evidence is early-stage
- You take no blood thinners or other regular medication
- You take warfarin or other blood thinners, or regular medication, without checking with your pharmacist
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a hormone-sensitive condition
- You want a product with solid human evidence
The science
Resveratrol· evidence: Insufficient
Resveratrol is a plant compound found in grape skins, red wine, peanuts and Japanese knotweed, which is the usual source for supplements. Much of the interest comes from laboratory and animal studies on ageing.
Human trials are small and short, and their results have been inconsistent; it is also poorly absorbed. There are no authorised health claims for resveratrol, so we make no claims about what it does. Products that pair it with 'NAD+' are based on early-stage research, and swallowed NAD+ itself is largely broken down before it is absorbed.
Typical dose: Supplements typically give 100 to 500 mg a day. EFSA considers up to 150 mg a day of trans-resveratrol safe for adults as a novel food.
Safety: Higher doses can upset the stomach. Resveratrol may add to the effect of blood thinners and affect how some medicines are broken down. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and speak to your GP first if you take regular medication or have a hormone-sensitive condition.
