At a glance
Insufficient
evidence for acetyl-l-carnitine
Our honest take
An unflavoured acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) powder from a well-known UK brand. We have not been able to verify the serving size, so check the tub for the dose. ALCAR is marketed for energy, but there is not enough good evidence that it helps healthy people who eat a normal diet, and it is not a fat burner. Powders are usually the cheapest way to buy it per gram if you want to try it.
- You want a vegan ALCAR powder to add to a drink
- You prefer a UK brand
- You are buying it for fat loss: the evidence does not support that
- You take thyroid medication or blood thinners, unless your GP agrees
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18
The science
Acetyl-L-carnitine· evidence: Insufficient
Acetyl-L-carnitine is a form of carnitine, which the body makes itself and which helps move fat into cells to be used for energy. It is marketed for energy and brain health. There is not enough good evidence that taking it improves exercise performance or energy in healthy people who eat a normal diet.
There is no authorised health claim for it, so we make no claims about its effects.
Typical dose: Products usually provide 0.5–2 g a day
Safety: Can cause stomach upset in some people. Speak to your GP first if you take thyroid medication or blood thinners.
