Insufficient
evidence for boron
Our honest take
Boron tablets, 120 to a pack, aimed at gym-goers. Claims that boron raises testosterone rest on a few tiny short studies, and boron has no authorised health claims. We could not verify the boron per tablet, so check the label: the UK safe upper level is 9.6 mg a day from all sources, and most people already get 1 to 3 mg from food.
- You have read the evidence, understand it is thin, and still want to try a modest boron dose
- You are expecting a noticeable effect on testosterone or muscle: the evidence does not support it
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
- You already take a multivitamin or bone formula containing boron
The science
Boron· evidence: Insufficient
Boron is a trace element found in fruit, vegetables, nuts, pulses, wine and coffee. Most adults take in about 1 to 3 mg a day from food. It has no set daily requirement and no NRV, because it has not been shown to be essential for humans.
Small studies have looked at boron and bone, joints and hormone levels, but the evidence is limited and inconsistent. Claims that boron raises testosterone come from a handful of tiny short studies. There are no authorised health claims for boron.
Most people do not need a boron supplement.
Typical dose: Supplements usually give 3 to 10 mg a day.
Safety: The UK Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals set a safe upper level of 9.6 mg a day from all sources, and EFSA's upper limit is 10 mg a day for adults. Higher doses may harm fertility and development, so avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Keep away from children.
