At a glance

Insufficient

evidence for biotin

Our honest take

Glycerol-based biotin drops: five drops give 2,500 µg of biotin, which is 50 times the daily reference intake. Adults need only about 40 µg a day and most diets provide it, and there is no good evidence that extra biotin improves hair or nails in people who are not deficient. It is cheap and vegan-friendly, but the main thing to know is that a dose this high can distort some blood tests, so tell your doctor before any blood test.

  • You have been told by a health professional that you are low in biotin
  • You prefer drops to capsules and want a vegan-friendly product
  • You are hoping for thicker hair or stronger nails: the evidence does not support biotin for this unless you are deficient
  • You have blood tests coming up, especially thyroid or heart tests: biotin can give false results, so speak to your doctor first
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding: check with your GP or midwife before taking high-dose biotin
The science

Biotin· evidence: Insufficient

Biotin (vitamin B7) helps the body turn food into energy. Adults need only about 40 to 50 µg a day, and it is found in eggs, nuts, seeds, meat and many other foods. Deficiency is rare and is mostly seen with rare genetic conditions, long-term raw egg white intake or some medicines.

Biotin is heavily marketed for hair and nails. In people who are actually short of biotin, hair and skin problems improve when it is replaced. In healthy people who are not deficient, there is no good evidence that high-dose biotin makes hair grow faster or thicker, or nails stronger.

Most hair-and-nail products use 2,500 to 10,000 µg, which is 50 to 200 times the daily need. The body excretes the excess, so it is not known to be harmful, but you are paying for an amount you do not need.

Authorised health claim
Biotin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Biotin contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system. Biotin contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism. Biotin contributes to normal psychological function. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. (Applies where a daily dose gives at least 15% of the NRV, i.e. 7.5 µg.)

Typical dose: Adults need about 40 µg a day (NRV on labels: 50 µg). Most diets provide this.

Safety: High-dose biotin can make some blood tests give false results, including thyroid tests and the troponin test used to diagnose heart attacks. Tell your doctor and the lab that you take biotin, and ask whether you should stop it for a few days before a blood test. The UK Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals considered 970 µg a day from supplements unlikely to cause harm; there is limited safety data above that.
