Vegan Supplements

Compare vegan supplements on what's actually in each daily dose, the source of each nutrient and the cost per day. A vegan filter is a starting point, not a guarantee, so check each product's label and any certification before you buy.

What makes a supplement vegan?

A vegan supplement contains nothing derived from animals, including the capsule shell and the source of each nutrient. The Vegan Society defines veganism in dietary terms as dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals, and its Vegan Trademark standards also rule out animal testing and require brands to minimise cross-contamination.

Two ingredients catch people out most often: gelatine, used in some capsules and gummies, and vitamin D3. The Vegan Society says many supplements contain vitamin D3 derived from lanolin, which comes from sheep's wool, while vegan D3 can come from lichen and vitamin D2 is not derived from animals.

Is every product in this collection certified vegan?

No. Products appear here because they are listed as suitable for vegans, and only some carry a certification such as the Vegan Trademark. Even where a product title says vegan, check the label for the exact product and flavour, as recipes change.

Vegan doesn't mean allergen-free either. The government's allergy advice says you should never assume a product labelled as vegan is safe to eat if you have an allergy, and to look for a precautionary "may contain" label.

Which supplements do vegans need?

The NHS says sources of vitamin B12 for vegans are limited and a vitamin B12 supplement may be needed. It also says everyone should consider a daily vitamin D supplement in autumn and winter, and that vegans should read the label to make sure the vitamin D used is not of animal origin.

For omega-3, the Vegan Society says a vegan supplement made from microalgae is not considered essential, and suggests one to two rich sources of ALA, a plant omega-3, each day, such as walnuts, chia seeds or ground linseeds. Browse vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you're pregnant, have a medical condition or take medication.

How do you compare vegan supplements?

Compare the amount of each nutrient per daily dose and the cost per day, not the number of ingredients or the size of the %NRV (the percentage of the daily reference amount) on the front of the pack.

"We think customers should compare the actual amount of active ingredients they're getting, rather than just the format or marketing," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ. Our guide to reading a supplement label explains how to find these figures.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
