High-Stimulant Pre-Workout

Compare high-stimulant pre-workouts on the number that matters most: the caffeine in one full-strength serving, and what that adds to everything else you drink that day. These products sit at the top end of our caffeine range, so we put the EFSA and NHS figures next to them and explain how to read the label before you buy.

What does high-stim pre-workout mean?

High-stim (high-stimulant) means a pre-workout with a lot of caffeine per serving compared with the rest of the category. There is no legal definition, so the label, not the name on the tub, tells you how much you're getting.

By law, a food supplement with added caffeine must carry the warning "Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women", with the caffeine content per portion recommended for daily use. That figure is your starting point for every product on this page.

How much caffeine is in a high-stim pre-workout?

It varies widely from product to product, and some full-strength servings contain more caffeine than EFSA's single-dose figure for healthy adults. That is why we ask you to check the caffeine per serving on every label rather than assume.

Look for three things: the caffeine per scoop, how many scoops make a full serving, and any other caffeine sources listed, such as guarana or tea extracts. The UK government's guidance names guarana and certain tea leaves as natural sources of caffeine, so they count towards your total too. Our guide to reading a supplement label explains where to find each figure.

How much caffeine is safe in a day?

EFSA says single doses of up to 200mg, and up to 400mg a day spread through the day, do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults, apart from pregnant women. The UK government's advice on caffeine supplements goes further: avoid supplements with more than 200mg of caffeine in a single serving, or more than 400mg in servings through the day.

Source Caffeine Where the figure comes from
Cup of tea 75mg NHS
250ml can of energy drink 80mg NHS
Cup of instant coffee 100mg NHS
Single dose for healthy adults Up to 200mg EFSA
Daily total for healthy adults Up to 400mg EFSA
Daily total in pregnancy 200mg NHS and EFSA

The NHS figures for tea, coffee and energy drinks come from its guidance on caffeine in pregnancy, which also notes that filter and coffee-shop coffee can contain more. Add up every source: a full-strength pre-workout plus two coffees can reach the daily figure before the evening.

Is a strong pre-workout a better pre-workout?

No. More caffeine doesn't mean a better product, and the research doesn't show that the highest dose suits everyone. The ISSN's caffeine position stand says side effects seem to increase in line with the dose, and that people respond to caffeine very differently.

As an illustration (example figures, not real products), a pre-workout with 150mg of caffeine per serving and one with 300mg are both sold as pre-workout, but the second gives you twice as much. "That's a significant difference, particularly for beginners or people who train in the evening," says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ. If you're new to caffeine-based pre-workouts, our moderate-stim range is a lower-caffeine place to compare from.

What are the side effects of high-stim pre-workout?

The UK government says high levels of caffeine can cause anxiety, sleeplessness, agitation, palpitations, diarrhoea and restlessness, and headaches and nausea. People who are sensitive to caffeine, or who have an underlying health condition, need to take extra care.

Many pre-workouts also contain beta-alanine. The ISSN says its only reported side effect is paraesthesia (tingling), which can be reduced by taking smaller divided doses. The UK government's caffeine guidance also warns that dry scooping (swallowing powder without mixing it with water), or increasing the serving because you feel you can handle more, can take you past the recommended amount.

Can you take high-stim pre-workout in the evening?

You can, but caffeine late in the day may affect your sleep. EFSA says 100mg of caffeine may affect sleep in some adults, particularly close to bedtime, and a high-stim serving can contain well over that.

If you train after work, compare the caffeine per serving with that 100mg figure, or look at stim-free pre-workouts, which contain no caffeine.

How do you compare value on high-stim pre-workout?

Compare the cost per full-strength serving, not the number of servings printed on the tub. Some tubs count a half scoop as one serving.

"A tub advertised as 40 servings might only provide 20 servings when using the manufacturer's recommended full-strength dose. That can make a product appear better value than it actually is," says Andy.

How to compare value (example figures, not real products): a £30 tub sold as 40 servings looks like 75p a serving. If the full-strength dose is two scoops, you get 20 servings, so it costs £1.50 a serving. A £25 tub with 25 one-scoop servings costs £1 a serving, and is the better value of the two despite the lower serving count. Check the caffeine in that full-strength dose too, because doubling the scoops doubles the caffeine.

Who should avoid high-stim pre-workout?

Caffeine supplements are not for children or pregnant women, and the NHS says pregnant women should have no more than 200mg of caffeine a day from all sources. Anyone who is sensitive to caffeine, or who has a heart condition, high blood pressure, anxiety or another medical condition, or takes medication, should speak to their GP or pharmacist first.

"Customers need to understand what they're taking, how much they're taking and whether the ingredients suit their individual needs," says Andy. Compare caffeine levels across the whole category in our pre-workout guide.
