Supplements for Focus

People shopping for focus supplements usually look at caffeine products, amino acids such as L-tyrosine and L-theanine, and vitamins and minerals. We explain what each contains and what the evidence does and doesn't show. Sleep, regular meals and breaks matter more.

Does caffeine help you focus?

Caffeine has no authorised health claims, so we don't claim it improves focus. A review published by the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) cites research in which caffeine enhanced attention, vigilance and reaction time, but it also says caffeine negatively affects sleep quality and that side effects rise with the dose.

Many products in this collection are high-stimulant pre-workouts, so check the caffeine per serving. EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) says single doses of caffeine up to 200mg, and up to 400mg a day, raise no safety concerns for healthy adults, and up to 200mg a day in pregnancy. Count every source, including coffee, tea and energy drinks.

Do any vitamins or minerals have authorised claims about mental function?

A few have authorised claims: "Iron contributes to normal cognitive function" and "Pantothenic acid contributes to normal mental performance", and magnesium, niacin, folate and biotin each "contribute to normal psychological function" (GB register of authorised health claims). They apply only to products that are at least a source of the nutrient.

L-tyrosine and L-theanine are amino acids with no authorised health claims, so we make no claims for them. Browse nootropics and focus.

What does the NHS suggest for tiredness?

Everyday habits come first. The NHS suggests eating regular meals and healthy snacks every 3 to 4 hours, regular exercise, keeping to regular sleep times and cutting down on caffeine gradually.

Difficulty concentrating can be a sign of stress, and if you're always tired the NHS advises seeing a GP if your tiredness affects your daily life.

We sell the products on this page. That's our commercial interest, and it's why we show the evidence alongside them. This page is general information for adults, not personalised medical advice. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet.
