In UK law a food can only be called \"high protein\" if \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/eur\/2006\/1924\/annex\"\u003eat least 20% of its energy comes from protein\u003c\/a\u003e; protein gives \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/eur\/2011\/1169\/annex\/XIV\"\u003e4 kcal per gram\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor example (example figures, not a real product), a 220 kcal cookie with 12g of protein gets 48 kcal, or about 22%, of its energy from protein. A 150 kcal pudding with 20g gets 53%. The NHS says a food is \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/food-guidelines-and-food-labels\/how-to-read-food-labels\/\"\u003ehigh in sugar above 22.5g per 100g and high in saturated fat above 5g per 100g\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLower-sugar versions often use sweeteners or polyols. The NHS says \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/food-types\/are-sweeteners-safe\/\"\u003epolyols such as sorbitol and xylitol can have a laxative effect in large amounts\u003c\/a\u003e.
