This collection includes caffeinated shots, pump-style shots and energy shots.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ISSN's review of energy drinks and energy shots found that \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/1550-2783-10-1\"\u003ethe main active nutrients in most of these products appear to be caffeine and\/or carbohydrate\u003c\/a\u003e, and that the added value of the other ingredients remains to be determined. So start with the caffeine figure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHow much caffeine is in a pre-workout shot?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt varies by product, and the only reliable figure is the one on the label. A food supplement with added caffeine must state the caffeine per portion recommended for daily use, under the warning \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/eur\/2011\/1169\/annex\/III\"\u003e\"Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women\"\u003c\/a\u003e. Drinks with more than 150mg per litre carry a different warning (\"High caffeine content\") and must show the amount per 100ml.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCompare that figure with everyday sources. The NHS gives \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/pregnancy\/keeping-well\/foods-to-avoid\/\"\u003eabout 100mg for a cup of instant coffee, 75mg for a cup of tea and 80mg for a 250ml can of energy drink\u003c\/a\u003e, and says filter and coffee-shop coffee can contain more. A pump-style shot may contain no caffeine at all, so check each one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eIs a pre-workout shot safe?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor healthy adults, EFSA says \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/topics\/topic\/caffeine\"\u003esingle doses of caffeine up to 200mg, and up to 400mg a day spread through the day\u003c\/a\u003e, do not raise safety concerns, apart from pregnant women. EFSA adds that up to 200mg taken less than two hours before intense exercise does not raise safety concerns under normal conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe UK government advises \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/food-supplements-containing-caffeine\/food-supplements-containing-caffeine\"\u003eavoiding supplements with more than 200mg of caffeine in a single serving\u003c\/a\u003e, and warns that high levels can cause anxiety, sleeplessness, agitation, palpitations, diarrhoea and restlessness. The ISSN energy drinks review says indiscriminate use, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/1550-2783-10-1\"\u003eespecially more than one serving a day\u003c\/a\u003e, may lead to adverse effects. The ISSN caffeine position stand says \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12970-020-00383-4\"\u003ethe most common timing for caffeine is 60 minutes before exercise\u003c\/a\u003e, and that responses vary a lot between people.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThink about the time of day as well. EFSA says \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/topics\/topic\/caffeine\"\u003e100mg of caffeine may affect sleep in some adults, particularly close to bedtime\u003c\/a\u003e. If you train in the evening, a caffeine-free shot or a \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/stim-free-pre-workout\"\u003estim-free pre-workout\u003c\/a\u003e avoids the issue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003ePre-workout shot or powder: which is better value?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePowder is usually cheaper per serving; shots cost more for convenience. Compare the cost per shot with the cost per full-strength serving of a powder, and the caffeine in each.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Two pre-workouts can look very similar on the shelf but have completely different formulations, caffeine levels and costs per serving,\" says Andy Arshad, who runs SupplementHQ.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHow to compare value\u003c\/strong\u003e (example figures, not real products): a box of 12 shots for £24 costs £2 a shot. A £30 tub of powder labelled as 30 servings costs £1 a serving. If the full-strength dose is two of those servings, you get 15 full servings at £2 each, the same as the shot.
